Westfield Bondi Junction attack: Killer named as Queensland man Joel Cauchi

NSW Police have named the man responsible for killing six people inside a Sydney mall and injuring several others.

The attacks took place after 3pm on Saturday (local time) inside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre.

Five women and one man were stabbed to death inside the busy shopping centre.

Joel Cauchi, 40, arrived in Sydney from Queensland in March and police believe he had no ideological motivation for the attacks.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke spoke with media on Sunday and said Cauchi had been suffering from mental health issues.

Cooke said Cauchi "has been identified as the offender in this matter".

"We believe he came to NSW last month," he said. "We know that shortly after coming to Sydney, he took possession of a storage facility that has been identified, and we have worked through that very small storage facility."

Cooke said police are in contact with the man's family.

"They are cooperating with us. We know that shortly after coming to Sydney, he took possession of a storage facility that has been identified and we have worked through that very small storage facility," he told reporters.

"We know that the offender in the matter suffered, suffers from mental health. We are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender but very clearly to us at this stage it would appear that this is related to the mental health of the individual involved."

Cooke said work is ongoing to speak with families of those killed in the attacks.

"We are working through the process now of speaking with the families, and supporting the families of those victims, two of whom appear to have no family in Australia," he said.

"So, we are working through and with agencies overseas to attempt to reach out to the families of those victims.”

Cooke said he couldn't yet confirm the nationalities of the victims. New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was not aware of any Kiwis being involved.

Cooke said "a number of people remain in hospital being treated for their injuries".

"A young child remains in a serious but stable condition."

It comes after a nine-month-old baby was stabbed in the attacks, along with her mother, who was killed.

The baby is recovering from her injuries in hospital and has reportedly undergone surgery.

Twelve people remain in hospital with injuries.
