The search for the woman trapped after a Western Sydney townhouse explosion has ended in tragedy after more than 36 hours.
Jasmin Mhey was left unaccounted for after the suspected gas explosion in Whalan on Saturday afternoon.
An urgent search to find her under the rubble was launched, with reports of taps and noises coming from the collapsed building, but it was hampered by torrential rain, a gas leak and fire.
Neighbours told Australia's 7News how Mhey's mother had reacted when she found out her daughter was missing.
"She broke out crying a couple of times," neighbour Evelyn said.
"But then she kept saying, 'my daughter's strong, my daughter's strong, my daughter's strong'."
Then on Monday morning came grim news, with police confirming in a statement a body had been found.
"Following an extensive search operation over the weekend, the body of a woman was found about 3:20am on Monday at the scene," they said.
"The woman is yet to be formally identified.
"A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner."
7News reported that it understood she was in a room under a concrete slab when the blast occurred.
In a statement shared via police, Mhey's family thanked emergency services for their efforts.
"We especially want to thank all the police officers, NSW Fire and Rescue personnel and NSW Ambulance paramedics," the family's statement said.
"The family is so appreciative of their support, kindness and assistance.
"We'd also like to thank the public for their prayers and for respecting our privacy at this tragic time."
