Police have captured dangerous prisoner William Katipa following his escape from Waikeria Prison in Waikato early yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson from Te Awamutu police said the 43-year-old convicted rapist was caught at Puahue, south of Te Awamutu and relatively close to the prison, this evening.

He is due to appear tomorrow in Hamilton District Court charged with escaping a penal institute.

Katipa escaped from a medium security unit at the prison between 2.30am and 3.30am.

He was serving preventive detention for raping a woman in front of her two-and-half-year-old daughter. He had previously been jailed for raping a 13-year-old girl.

While in Waikeria, he reportedly attempted to rape a fellow prisoner.

A second prisoner who attempted to escape yesterday was caught by prison staff.
