A lack of water has hampered efforts by Manawatu firefighters to tackle a blaze at Halcombe's Taumata o Te Ra marae.
They were called out shortly after 8am this morning, with as many as six fire appliances arriving at the scene.
However, there were difficulties getting water supplies, and Mike Wanoa from Fire Communications says tankers had to be sent from other parts of the region.
There's no indication as to how the fire took hold or how extensive the damage to the Hastings St marae is.
