Police have arrested a man in connection with an incident in which a 14-year-old boy was doused in petrol.

A fight between the boy and a group of others huffing in central Hamilton was captured on security cameras in Garden Pl yesterday.

The victim had fought with one of a group of three males and hurt his arm when he fell, says Detective Sergeant Matt Cranshaw.

The boy was taken to Waikato Hospital, where his arm was treated and he was decontaminated from the petrol.

Initial indications are that a group of people were huffing in the area, Det Sgt Cranshaw said.

"While far from acceptable, [it] would go some way to explain why a person was in the central city with petrol that was believed to have been contained in a plastic bag."

Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in relation to the dousing of the victim.

"It is too early to speculate on how the victim sustained his arm injury and our inquiries are continuing."

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det Sgt Cranshaw at the Hamilton Central Police Station on (07) 858 6200 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
