An outdoor gas heater recalled by Mitre 10 is the same model linked to the deaths of a Taumarunui couple in July, the hardware retailer says.

Mitre 10 today announced the recall its Meteor tabletop patio gas heater of which 2000 have been sold since 2006.

"The carbon monoxide levels emitted by some units of this product may be unsafe and possibly an extreme health hazard when used in an indoor or unvented environment," the company's recall notice said.

The company said it was recalling all of the heaters, in stainless steel and powdercoated finishes, with SKU numbers 082824, 082825, 083532 and 083533.

Mitre 10 confirmed today the Meteor heater was found in the bedroom of David and Bernadette Otimi who died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at their Taumarunui home in July.

Police and the Fire Service said that the heater was designed for outdoor use only.

The deaths have been referred to the coroner, who will make a formal finding once all of the medical evidence is available to him.
