It's the end of an era in central Christchurch, with the city's earthquake-damaged old police station imploded. More than 100 kilograms of explosives were planted inside the building to bring it down.

The landmark building, owned by Ngai Tahu, was imploded at 5pm today, with the action streamed live online.

Ceres NZ, which is responsible for the demolition, said people should stay away from the site and watch the implosion at home.

"This building has a large number of existing buildings around it," spokesman Bernie de Vere said.

"The river, landmarks and large established trees in the vicinity will restrict viewing of the implosion. Safety fences around the site will also mean viewing is extremely limited."

The police station was designed by the Ministry of Works in the late 1960s and built in the early '70s.

New Zealand's first building implosion took place in August 2012, when Christchurch's Radio Network House was demolished.
