Cabinet Minister Trevor Mallard has apologised to National MP Tau Henare for punching him in the jaw after an argument in parliament.
Henare had earlier verbally goaded Mallard and the two met outside the chamber when Mallard landed a punch which led to a brawl which according to Henare continued with the two men on the ground for some time.
Mallard, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen, later went and apologised to Henare.
Henare says he has accepted the apology but also says that if he had not received one he would have laid assault charges with the police.
