A memorial service will be held for the country's most famous sheep.

Shrek was put to sleep yesterday, due to ailing health.

The merino became world famous after he was found in an Otago cave in April 2004 carrying 27kg of fleece.

He was shorn on national television, and two-and-a-half years later shorn again on an iceberg floating off the coast of Dunedin.

Shrek would have turned 17 this year.
