Police crack down on homebrew sales

Rotorua police are taking a hard line against home brewers selling alcohol.

It follows the sentencing of a 73-year-old man over the unlicensed sale and supply of alcohol from his Clayton Rd home.

Police say the man had enough ingredients to brew 96 one-litre bottles of spirits and had renovated a room into a bar.

Sergeant Mike Membery says there's a growing number of these types of cases.

"The main concern around the homebrew setup is hygiene as one part and how safe the product is," says Mr Membery. "It can vary quite a lot in alcohol content if you're not sure on what you're doing."

The 73-year-old appeared in court this month and was offered diversion.
