Students paid to protest against Wellington bus proposal

Next month human buses will travel through Wellington's Manners Mall in protest at the pedestrian mall being opened up to buses.

The chassis of the buses will be made up of paid students, recruited via Student Job Search.

The students will have to stay for a public meeting and then walk from the mall the short distance to the Wellington City Council Chambers.

They will get $25 for their trouble and Student Job Search says the response has been strong.

Protest organiser Maria van der Meel has no qualms about paying students to attend - comparing it to politicians hiring students during the election.

Van der Meel says it shows she's committed but the Mayor of Wellington disagrees.

“I think it's a joke if you get to a stage that you have to pay people to form part of a protest, [this is] about making it a much more efficient public transport” says Mayor - Kerry Prendergast.

The multi-million dollar proposal, which would open the mall to buses for the first time in 30 years, is in its final stages of consultation.

The human bus is planned for December 11 - the same day council is expected to make a final decision on the fate of Manners Mall.
