Tired doctors want lighter workload

The New Zealand Resident Doctors' Association is warning that stress on doctors is likely to cause more medical mistakes.

National secretary Dr Deborah Powell says resident doctors are being asked to cope with unreasonable workloads and hours.

"We are seeing more patients, and the patients tend to be more complex these days than they have been in the past," she said on Firstline this morning.

"The second issue, especially at night, is just a simple matter of getting too tired, being fatigued."
