NZ arm wrestler taking on world's best

Maateiwarangi Heta-Morris, or Matt, is off to Poland.

But this is no holiday, Heta-Morris is Australasia's best over-95kg arm wrestler and he'll take on the best in the business at the 2013 World Arm Wrestling Championships.

"[I'm] pretty nervous ay, pretty nervous, this will be the first time competing at a world level," says Heta-Morris.

The 24-year-old was a late bloomer and has only been in the sport for around two years but is certainly making up for lost time amongst his peers.

Despite his recent success, though, he's taking nothing for granted at the world's, and with more than 2000 entrants this year, the trip is as much about experience as it is winning.

New Zealand Arm Wrestling president Anton West is right in behind his young charge.

"I definitely think he's going to make a big impact, they will know who Matt is from New Zealand - only time will tell," says West.

He hopes Heta-Morris' experience will benefit the sport back here too.

"Matt will hopefully gain some valuable experience and come show us how the rest of the guys in the world are doing there."

And for those wanting a leg - or arm - up on their mates next time at the pub, what's his best arm wrestling tip?

"Cover their thumb, rise your fingers over their thumb and down they will go," he says.
