Kiwi lucky to avoid flight MH17

There are some people who know just how lucky they are today. They are the ones who would have passengers on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 had it not been for sheer chance.

Aucklander Mike Bullot has never been so happy to be home.

"I'm still piecing bits together and thinking how it could've been me," he says.

The husband of Kiwi chef Chelsea Winter was handed a boarding pass for an overbooked flight before Malaysia Airlines MH17 just minutes before the gate closed.

Had a seat not become available Mr Bullot would have been put on today’s MH17 flight, which crashed in rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine this morning.

"Standing there with the 20 or 30 other people who were in the same situation, I have no idea who didn't make it of those people standing around me."

Mr Bullot says the news is still sinking in.

"It's pretty close how it's turned out and I feel pretty lucky that it's turned out the way it has."

He says he might have to buy a Lotto ticket this weekend and have a few beers tonight.
