America's Cup 2021: American Magic putting faith in flag socks for Prada Cup comeback

Kiwis are partial to a fairytale comeback story and after their spectacular crash two weeks ago, American Magic have the support of many - but the team are also banking on a lucky charm.

"It's Flag-sock Friday, so every Friday the guys on the team wear their American flag socks," says trimmer Mac Agnese. "It's just fun we like to have to keep things light on base.

"I might wear them on the boat... we'll see."

In 1995, Team New Zealand boss Sir Peter Blake wore his lucky red socks on racing days and they soon became a symbol of the country's support.

Red socks could be seen around the race village on Friday, but they probably had nothing to do with the racing.

What about the uber-fashionable Italians with Prada Luna Rossa?

"No, no socks for us," says sailor Pierluigi de Felice.

But the Italians did have their own lucky charm, with former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw seen at their base, hugging the team as he sent them off.

Maybe he gave them a pep talk that helped out on the water.
