PETER BURLING

Born: January 1, 1991 (30)

Role: Team NZ helmsman

America's Cup campaigns: 2

Burling joined Emirates Team NZ for the 2017 America's Cup campaign, where he became the youngest winning helmsman in the event's history at the age of 26.

The now-30-year-old has a remarkable track record before joining Team NZ. He was the youngest 49er sailor at the 2012 London Olympics, where he and Blair Tuke won silver medals.

Four years later at Rio, Burling was the NZ flag bearer at the opening ceremony and became the youngest-ever 49er Olympic gold medallist, as he and Tuke dominated the event, with the biggest winning margin in any Olympic sailing competition for more than 50 years.

Burling has dominated world championships at both youth and senior level, winning nine gold medals, three silvers and two bronze.

The Tauranga local is also a two-time World Sailor of the Year - the first time in 2015 with Tuke and again in 2017, after winning the 'Auld Mug'.

In 2017 New Year's honours, Burling was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sailing.
