Married at First Sight NZ: Ben and Vicky open up about that dinner party drama

Sunday's episode of Married At First Sight NZ was explosive for many reasons. Tensions between Ben, Vicky and Hadyn reached boiling point, resulting in a fight so heated, producers had to step in to stop things.

Ben told Newshub today the bad vibes had been growing for some time.

"What you've got to remember when you're watching the show it's compressed down into a couple of episodes... but this [was happening] over a series of weeks," he said.

"Aaron and Hadyn were messaging each other about me and it kind of got to a point where I was over the whole 'he said, she said' thing.

"I got to the dinner table and said 'you know what, this needs to be hashed out now because I'm not going to do another three weeks of [that]. It just needed to be done."

Ben and Vicky snuck away from the dinner party to hide in the bathroom and discussed how to liven up what they thought was fairly boring conversation.

But they insist it wasn't their intention to be seen starting drama.

"To be fair, I'd forgotten we were mic'd at this point," Vicky admitted today. "The intention wasn't for it to escalate and get to that point...things were getting said about us-"

"I thought it would be a bit of fun," Ben cut in.

He confessed, however, that watching the episode he was unhappy with the way the argument played out.

"I'm not happy with that... I didn't articulate the things that I wanted to say.

"It's not really an excuse, but if you watched the episode, every time you see me I'm necking back the wine. So I'm what, like, three bottles deep by the time we're in that conversation. It's not how I wanted it to go, it just happened to be that way."

He also said he regretted the circumstances of the argument.

"I [also] regret doing it at that occasion, because the bar staff were working and they didn't need that. I don't like doing that in an establishment - it's kind of disrespectful."

But both 'Pretty Committee' members were quick to add there's no bad feelings between them and Hadyn any more.

"It's water under the bridge now for us. We've made peace with Hadyn," Vicky said.

Ben mirrored that statement in an Instagram posted on Sunday night of himself and Hadyn out for coffee, all tensions seemingly forgotten.
