Kiwi movie star James Rolleston is set to feature in a dramatic storyline on Shortland Street next month.

Rolleston is known for his work in Taika Waititi-directed Boy, as well as starring roles in The Dark Horse and Pork Pie

His role as Kawe on the iconic New Zealand soap opera will be his television debut.

"Shortland Street has been around longer than I have," he told NZME.

"There have been some huge Kiwi names on the show, so it's awesome to have a chance to have this experience."

It's already been a big year for the 21-year-old, marking his return to the silver screen in the Kiwi comedy smash The Breaker Upperers after a near-fatal car crash in 2016.

He spoke about the change in pace working in the new medium.

"It's hugely different from the film industry - it's so fast; there is not a lot of time for each scene like in the movies."

Rolleston's character on Shortland Street is a "good kid at heart" who starts a coffee van business after being released from prison.
