It's been confirmed - a musical version of the 1993 classic Mrs Doubtfire is on the way.

The musical adaptation is set to be written by John O'Farrell, Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick, who were behind Shakespearean musical comedy, Something Rotten!.

Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks has also been confirmed as the director, with musicals like Sister Act, Hello, Dolly! and Swing under his belt.

In 2015 the first reports of a potential musical surfaced but the idea had been benched until now.

Mrs Doubtfire is the story of a struggling actor who disguises himself as a British woman in order to nanny his own children whom he lost custody to during his divorce. The character was originally played by Robin Williams.

It was the first role for Mara Wilson, who later went onto play Matilda, also now a Broadway musical.

In a joint statement Fox Stage Productions said: "Mrs Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving... Getting this team together and crafting Mrs Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can't wait to get into production."

It joins other '90s films that have being made into musicals such as Pretty Woman, Lion King and The Wedding Singer.
