Former TV3 news presenter John Campbell will be replacing Jack Tame as co-host of TVNZ's Breakfast show with Hayley Holt, the state broadcaster has announced.

The veteran journalist left MediaWorks in 2015, joining Radio New Zealand before moving to TVNZ in 2018.

"Breakfast offers the best of a live studio environment, with the opportunity to still work in the field  to me that's the perfect balance," says Campbell.

"It's a privilege to be part of New Zealanders' first news source of the day, bringing viewers breaking coverage from overnight, sharing stories that matter from around the country, and giving people a voice. I'm looking forward to joining the team."

Tame is leaving his Breakfast role to join politics show Q+A, replacing Corin Dann, who is leaving TVNZ.

"I'm really sad to be leaving the Breakfast whānau, the members of which do fantastic work in exhausting circumstances," said Tame.

Campbell left TV3, now Three, after a 24-year career than included presenting the 6pm news bulletin and hosting Campbell Live.

"I started here aged 27 in a suit I borrowed from my dad," he told the audience of his final TV3 broadcast.

"I could never have dreamed what would happen in the next 24 years. Thank you so much for watching us."

Campbell's new role on Breakfast starts on April 29.
