William Waiirua bids sunglasses goodbye for 'proper tango' on Dancing With The Stars NZ

Social media sensation William Waiirua ditched his iconic sunglasses for a smooth tango on Dancing With The Stars NZ on Sunday night.

Ahead of the first elimination of the season, Waiirua and partner Amelia McGregor headed into the ballroom with a tango to Calvin Harris' 'Giant'.

Contrary to last week's quirky and humorous jive, Waiirua locked in to serious business as he and McGregor moved their way across the floor.

And following last week's incredibly tight hot pink shorts, he was dressed to kill in a tightly fitted black shirt.

The trio of judges had plenty of praise for Waiirua as he kicked off Sunday's show, with Rachel White saying he performed a "proper tango".

"From the minute you stepped on the dance floor, I could see that you mean business," head judge Camilla Sacre-Dallerup said.

Julz Tocker echoed the sentiment but commented that he wanted to see better technique - leaping out of his seat to demonstrate just what he meant.

Waiirua was awarded 6, 7 and 6 for his efforts, bringing his total score to 38 before the first elimination on Monday.

The next episode of DWTS NZ will air on Monday at 7pm on Three. The full episode can be watched again on ThreeNow.
