'Old Town Road' hitmaker Lil Nas X comes out as gay

Lil Nas X, the rapper behind the country/hip hop hit 'Old Town Road' has come out as gay on social media.

He used the lyrics from another of his tracks, 'C7osure', to announce the news on the final day of pride month.

"Some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care, some of y'all not gone fwm [f**k with me] no more," he tweeted.

"But before this month ends I want y'all to listen closely to C7osure," he wrote, followed by a rainbow emoji.

Some of the lyrics from the track include the lines: "Brand new places I'll choose and I'll go, I know/Embracing this news I behold unfolding" and "I know, I know, I know it don't feel like it's time/But I look back at this moment, I'll see that I'm fine".

Of the rainbows included in the album artwork from his latest EP titled 7, Lil Nas X wrote: "Deadass thought I made it obvious".

'Old Town Road', which also features Billy Ray Cyrus, has been the number one song in the US charts since April this year.

The genre-bending mash up inspired a raft of memes and viral video challenges. A star-studded western style music video featuring Diplo and Chris Rock has garnered almost 184 million views on YouTube.
