US Dancing With the Stars faces backlash as former White House press secretary Sean Spicer joins for upcoming season

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer says he's "excited" to join the latest season of Dancing With the Stars, but the internet isn't so impressed.

Spicer, who was Donald Trump's press secretary from January 2017 until his resignation last August, made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday, saying "It's time to have some fun".

In his time in the role as Trump's press secretary, Spicer made a number of controversial statements - including that Trump attracted the "largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period" (false - photos showed it was much smaller than previous President Barack Obama's) and saying that Adolf Hitler "never used chemical weapons".

And now the ABC's Dancing With the Stars is facing backlash for confirming him as a competitor.

"Oh get Sean Spicer out of there for crying out loud," one Twitter user said.

Another wrote that it was "disgusting".

"Shameless. Craven. Complicit."

A former campaign chair for Obama said it was more like "dancing to fascism".

"Screw you for helping normalise Sean Spicer," Jon Cooper wrote.

There were some supporters, however, with 'America First', a group "dedicated to supporting President Trump", wishing him luck.

"Thank you," Spicer replied. "Going to need your vote."
