Review: The Good Liar's lead actors 'superb to watch'

Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen have hit local cinemas, appearing on the big screen together for the first time in The Good Liar.

What a fabulous way to end the year, getting to watch these two on the big screen.

Dame Helen and Sir Ian circle each other as Betty and Roy. She's a widow looking for companionship, he's clearly a ladies man looking for far more than a companion. He's after her money.

It's no spoiler to say here lies within a dirty rotten scoundrel, with Downton Abbey's Charles Carson (actor Jim Carter) on hand to muddy the increasingly murky waters. But just when you think you've got it all figured out, this tale goes dark - very dark indeed.

This film certainly kept me guessing and I do love that! It does, however, suffer from some rather jarring shifts in tone.

But here's the thing - both these colossal talents have been honing their craft on stage and on the small and big screens for decades and they are just superb to watch.

Three-and-a-half-stars.
