Kiwi Oscar nominee Matt Aitken on Avengers: Endgame's visual effects

It's Oscar's weekend, where this year a host of New Zealand filmmakers are being honoured with nominations for their work.

Included among them, is second-time nominee Matt Aitken from Wellington's Weta Digital. He and his team are up for Best Visual Effects for their work on Avengers: Endgame.

I first met Aitken at the Oscars ten years ago when he was nominated for District 9. He's worked on the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and Avatar.

At 6ft 4", the big man from Weta Digital is this year representing the big man from Avengers: Endgame - Thanos. Aitken and his enormous team of digital effects artists already won an Annie for their work on Thanos and who knows what Oscar will bring them come Sunday.

Weta Digital is no stranger to winners' podiums. The world-renowned visual effects house already has six Academy Awards with another ten science and tech Oscars. There are the six BAFTAs, the seven from their peers at the Visual Effects Society, and let's not forget Game of Thrones' zombie bear and episode 'The Bells' winning them two Emmys.
