'Yikes': Matthew Perry's slurred speech in Friends reunion interview concerns fans

A sneak-peek clip of the much-anticipated Friends reunion has sparked fresh concerns for Matthew Perry's wellbeing.

Perry's appearance and "slurred-speech" in an exclusive sit-down with People Magazine ahead of the reunion special worried fans, who turned to social media to share their thoughts.

Viewers felt the TV star stumbled over his words and seemed dazed while discussing how he took a cookie jar from the Friends set and gifted it to Lisa Kudrow.

"He sounds like he's had a stroke. Is he ok?," one Twitter user wrote.

"I hope he’s seeing a neurologist," said another.

"This makes me sad," added a third, while one tweet read simply: "Yikes!"

Meanwhile, some fans rushed to Perry's defense, calling the commentary on his appearance "disheartening".

"He's struggled with addiction and been through so much but y'all are so concerned about his looks when you should just be grateful he's still alive," one tweet read.

"Let's not use the Friends reunion to make fun of the way Matthew Perry looks these days. People age, funnily enough. Matthew has been through A LOT since Friends wrapped up in 2004," another said.

"Be respectful instead of judgmental."

A third Twitter user said they "felt bad" for Perry, adding: "He can't catch a break."

In the trailer for the unscripted reunion, Perry breaks down at one point, saying "Yep, I'm going to cry now," while seemingly reminiscing about a moment from filming the show.

The Friends reunion will be released in the US on HBO Max on May 27, but there's still no word on where it will air in New Zealand.
