Emmys 2021: Kiwi director Jessica Hobbs wins Best Drama Director for The Crown

New Zealander Jessica Hobbs has won the Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series award at the 2021 Emmys for her work on The Crown.

Hobbs was nominated for two Emmys for the third season of the hit Netflix show last year, but this year secured a win for her direction of the fourth.

Despite saying she was "too nervous to speak" while accepting the award, Hobbs went on to thank some of the people involved with the show, as well as her children and her partner, before paying homage to the female directors that had come before her.

"Not a lot of women have won this award, so I feel like I'm standing on the shoulders of some really extraordinary people," she said.

"I'm very grateful for the path that they tread. I'd particularly like to pay tribute to my mum, who at 77 is still directing."

Hobbs comes from a showbiz family - along with her parents Aileen O'Sullivan and Jonathan Teplitzky, who are both directors, her siblings - Chris, Rebecca and Katrina Hobbs - are all familiar faces from Shortland Street, and her other brother Tom is also an actor.

Hobbs began directing short films in her 20s while also working as an assistant director. She got her first big break on Australian television show Heartbreak High, later relocating to England to direct on shows like Apple Tree Yard and Broadchurch before joining The Crown in season three.
