Samantha Hayes welcomes baby girl Amaya Violet Blaauw

Newshub Live at 6pm presenter Samantha Hayes has announced the birth of her second baby, a little girl named Amaya.

Hayes shared the news on Instagram along with a series of family photos featuring her daughter's "adoring" big brother and "super dad" Jay Blaauw.

"The newest edition to our family, Amaya Violet Blaauw, arrived last Friday weighing 3.21kg," Hayes captioned the snaps.

"Where has the past week gone?! Jay and I think she's just beautiful and her big brother Marlow adores her.

"We're at home now relearning all the intricacies of caring for a newborn with the added bonus of an energetic toddler 'helping' too."

The broadcaster said her heart was "bursting with love" despite the challenges of welcoming a newborn during a COVID-19 lockdown.

Hayes thanked everyone who had ensured the safe arrival of her new baby, including the staff at Auckland Hospital's maternity ward, her obstetrician and her midwife.

She also made special mention of her partner Jay Blaauw, who she says "changes endless nappies, never gives up trying to settle Amaya, all while keeping Marlow happy and looking after me."

"I love you," she wrote.

Earlier this year, a pregnant Hayes revealed she had recovered from a "scary few days" spent in hospital fighting a mystery infection, facing worries her baby might be arriving two months early.

Hayes bid an emotional farewell to her colleagues when she went on maternity leave in August, and will return to Newshub Live at 6pm in the new year.
