Grimes has likened fame to being in an "abusive relationship" in a tweet declaring she doesn't want to be famous anymore due to trolls on social media.

The musician said she was being told "countless times throughout the day about what a failure she was" in a tweet that prompted support from fans and derision from those who felt she was unaware of her privilege.

"I just have literally zero interest in being famous anymore," the 33-year-old tweeted.

"My job requires being on social media. It's equivalent to an emotionally abusive relationship to hear countless times throughout the day about what a failure I am, just in order to do my job on the most basic level."

It was revealed the 'Delete Forever' hitmaker had split from partner Elon Musk in September this year after having welcomed their son X Æ A-Xii in May 2020.

Grimes' tweet divided social media users, many of whom offered words of support, while others were less sympathetic.

"You can literally just hire a PR person LMAO, rich people acting like replies on Twitter are abuse when they literally choose to interact with the app," one person wrote.

"Boo hoo," said another.

Meanwhile, fans of the singer said they were "heartbroken" to hear how she was feeling, encouraging her to take a break from social media to look after her mental health.

"If you need to walk away, walk away. There is power in walking away from things that are bad for your health," one tweet read.

"There is a season for everything in life. Maybe your season right now isn't in the spotlight. If it's somewhere else, don't fight it. Just do what you need to do."

Another fan replied: "It breaks my heart to see this. Your mental health is so important and we don't mind if you take a break from social media as we understand it can be so toxic on here.

"Your music has really helped me get through some of my bad days and I appreciate you so much."

Grimes recently revealed she had staged a paparazzi shot of her reading The Communist Manifesto after being "really stressed" by photographers following her.

"Paparazzi followed me 2 a shoot so I tried 2 think what I could do that would yield the most Onion-ish possible headline and it worked [sic]," she tweeted in October.
