A new trailer has been released for Elvis, Baz Luhrmann's biopic about the King of Rock 'n Roll starring Austin Butler in the title role.

The film is set to open in New Zealand cinemas on June 23.

Elvis is set to cover two decades of Presley's life, with a focus on the music legend's complicated relationship with his manager Tom Parker, played in the film by Tom Hanks.

It marks Luhrmann's first movie since 2013's The Great Gatsby, with Elvis's story told against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and 'loss of innocence' in the US as rock 'n roll took the nation by storm.

Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in the pop star's life, his wife Priscilla Presley, played by Olivia DeJonge.

Alongside Butler, DeJonge and Hanks, Elvis also stars Helen Thomson as the Presley's mother Gladys, Richard Roxburgh as his father Vernon, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Natasha Bassett as Dixie Locke, David Wenham as Hank Snow, Kelvin Harrison Jr as BB King, Xavier Samuel as Scotty Moore and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jimmie Rodgers Snow.
