Review: The Gray Man is a sizzling spy action thriller

The Marvel filmmaking duo Joe and Anthony Russo have taken their Captain America and turned him into a very bad man with an even worse moustache in their new movie The Gray Man.

Starring Chris Evans, his moustache, and Ryan Gosling, The Gray Man has just hit cinemas, landing on Netflix a week later.

The Gray Man is Ryan Gosling's first film since First Man five years ago and given the go-to-whoa foot to the floor insanity of this spy action thriller he would have needed to be well rested.

Gosling is Sierra 6. Recruited by the CIA from prison he becomes one of their greatest assets, a mix of Bourne, Bond and McGyvver with a bit of John Wick thrown in for good measure.

But his bad-guy body-counting funtimes go a little sidewise when he becomes the body down for the count, a former colleague - a bonafide nut-job called Lloyd (Chris Evans) has been sent to take him out.

It's fair to say there's nothing particularly fresh about this premise, but getting to watch The Gos face off with The Cap? Well I could watch that all day.

The balls-to-the-wall action set pieces are just so much fun, the always impressive Ana de Armas kicks serious butt and the sizzling chemistry between Sierra 6 and Lloyd is something to be savoured.

Four stars.
