The Script's co-founder and guitarist Mark Sheehan has died aged 46.

The Irish pop-rock band confirmed the news on Twitter that Sheehan had passed away in hopsital on Friday (local time) after a short illness.

"Much loved husband, father, brother, bandmate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness. The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time," the band tweeted.

Sheehan co-founded The Script in 2001 alongside lead vocalist Danny O'Donoghue and drummer Glen Power. The band's popular songs include 'Hall of Fame', 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' and 'Breakeven'.

Tributes have poured in for the rockstar including from the likes of former Boyzone member Mikey Graham, OneRepublic vocalist Ryan Tedder and Irish pop star and former member of Westlife Brian McFadden.

"Today we lost another young legend of music in Mark Sheehan of The Script," Graham wrote on Twitter.

"I can and do understand the pain Glen and Danny are feeling right now and also their families. All my love and support I offer you at this time.

"You gave the world your music, it will carry you home Mark."
