Wētā Workshop took just three days to create New Zealand's first 3D digital billboard

Wētā Workshop has revealed it took the company just three days to create New Zealand's first 3D digital billboard

It was made from practical FX and technology from the company's Wellington base.

The billboard features Jeff the troll, a creation from the Wētā Workshop experience whose hands can be seen coming out of the digital display and seemingly heading towards people.

It can be seen in Auckland's Britomart centre and also Wellington's airport.

Wētā Workshop area manager Sam Holdich told AM it was "pretty cool" to see "people stopping and filming".

"It looks like its hand is coming out of the screen," he told AM co-hosts Ryan Bridge and Laura Tupou.

The billboard used a puppeteer to create Jeff the troll and his actions dismantling the digital display that travellers get their information from.

"Usually the ones you'd see abroad are animated, but we went all in, using practical FX," Holidch said.

Holdich said the opportunity only came up six weeks ago, but they jumped on it.
