Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch has revealed she underwent "emergency surgery" that "saved her life" and forced her to cancel gigs.

The 'Dog Days Are Over' singer took to Instagram on Monday morning to apologise for cancelling "the last couple of shows" before telling her fans the reason why.

"I'm so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don't really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life," she said.

The group had cancelled their scheduled performances at the Zürich Openair and Rock en Seine music festivals in Switzerland and France respectively.

"I will be back to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Málaga (maybe not jumping so much but you can do that for me)," Welch went on.

''Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is a way of making sense.

"And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much needed strength and catharsis right now,'' she concluded.

It's not the first time the group has canned shows. Last year, the 36-year-old postponed Florence and the Machine's UK tour after discovering she had been performing on a broken foot.
