Show Me Shorts 2023 kicks off with 25 New Zealand films

First time short film director Johnny Brugh says being behind the camera was "really liberating".

His short film Proof kicks off the Auckland leg of the Show Me Shorts Film festival on Friday.

It stars Morgana O'Reilly and Dave Fane in what Brugh says is a "quirky story about ageing and faith."

Speaking to AM hosts Laura Tupou and Michael O'Keeffe on Friday, Brugh said the move behind the camera had been on the cards.

"It's a script I've had for a long time and I got to the point where I just wanted to make something. It had a year of crowdfunding and I got an amazing team together and we shot it," he said.

But Brugh also revealed there was a lot of pressure behind the scenes.

"You've got to raise some money, you've got to pay people," he said.

"Short films are about making things with not much money, about learning the craft."
