Mother asks anti-vaccine group how to protect daughter from measles

A mother who took to an anti-vaccine Facebook group to ask for suggestions on how to protect her daughter from a measles outbreak is being ridiculed online.

A screenshot of the unnamed mother "looking for recommendations" in the Natural Health Anti-Vaxx Community Facebook page was uploaded to Twitter by writer Jon Christian on Monday.

In her post to the page, the mother says: "My three-year-old is not vaccinated and there is currently a measles outbreak in my state. Any suggestions for precautions I can take to protect her would be very much appreciated".

While no further details are provided about the woman, a measles outbreak is currently sweeping through Washington State in the United States, where website Interweb reports she is from.

Many took to social media to ridicule the mother for turning to an anti-vaccine group, when measles vaccinations which could protect her daughter from the outbreak are very safe and effective, as Stanford University law and health research professor Michelle Mello told Futurity.

"If only there was something she could do to protect her child," one woman said, while another said parents like her should be "quarantined in an island away from modern civilisation".

"Have the kid adopted by a responsible adult," one man suggested.

"The fact that she is asking medical advice from a Facebook group should give you a clue as to how much common sense this mother has."

The post also stirred up the anti-vaccine debate again, with many calling out the community.

"I am just sitting here thinking most of these anti-vaxxers would not even be alive today without vaccinations," said one user.

"I can't help but wonder if people who don't give their kids vaccines against dangerous diseases are just a form of Darwinism playing out."

"My kids totally changed when they got vaccines. It was unreal. Now they contain immunities to preventable diseases."
