A cocktail being served at a bar in the US is probably not what you'd expect to indulge in during happy hour.

Yuzu, a restaurant and bar in Ohio, is serving a cocktail called 'Can't Even Literally', which is a berry margarita "thoughtfully complimented with a tampon applicator garnish".

In an advertisement for the contentious drink on the restaurant's Facebook page, it says $1 towards every purchase of the drink goes towards the Cleveland area women's shelter.

People commented on the advertisement in disgust - one said they'd never go to the restaurant again.

"Every single part of this is disgusting and degrading, and I'm never supporting a company that could put this kind of thing out in public again."

Another said the tampons used in the drinks could have simply been donated to the women's shelter.

"Who's idea was this? Did you seriously buy those tampons just to use them in drinks?

"Also, most women don't enjoy getting their periods FYI," she said.

Yuzu owner Dave Bumba told Fox 8 despite the controversy, they'd found a way to create conversation about domestic violence.

"This is a small way to bring awareness to real good causes that we are behind."
