Malaysian-fusion restaurant Madam Woo is offering a 15 percent discount to diners who can keep off their mobile phones for the entire duration of their meal.

The deal - available at their Auckland, Hamilton and Queenstown locations - offers patrons the opportunity to put their mobiles into a wooden box and focus on the food.

They even tape the box closed to make sure there's no cheating.

On Facebook, Madam Woo urged patrons to "put down the phone and pick up the conversation". They said: "Make eyes at your meal, not your phone".

The idea started as a temporary promotion offered through Try Local, "a Kiwi-owned, Kiwi-repping platform that collates deals, promotions and specials".

It began shortly after the trans-Tasman bubble opened and was initially only going to be for April, but it proved such a success the restaurant is bringing it back.

The initial promotion said that "T&Cs apply (such as don’t look at your phone) except in an emergency; a non-social media emergency."
