Young couple slammed online for 'red flag', 'unhealthy' sleeping arrangement in their home

A young couple has faced the wrath of the internet after they revealed their preference for having separate bedrooms, with outraged commentators warning the duo that their relationship isn't built to last.

The couple, both 19, decided they each wanted their own room in the home they share together in Kansas, a state in midwestern America.

In a clip uploaded to their TikTok account earlier this month, the couple - Carysn Soto and Ben Schmidt - explained they both wanted their own space and the freedom to decorate their rooms as they pleased without the need for compromise.

"When you and your boyfriend move in together but you want separate rooms so you can still have your own space and decorate how you want," Carsyn captioned the clip, which has been viewed almost three million times.

"At least he keeps his room clean most of the time," she added.

The clip includes footage of both her and Ben's rooms, demonstrating their very obvious differences in decor. While Carsyn's room is light, white and airy with neutral tones and pops of gold and green, Ben's room is mostly grey with blue LED lights and a more masculine feel.

However, the couple's decision has proved controversial, prompting fierce debate among viewers - many of whom warned Carsyn and Ben that their desire for separation was "unhealthy" and indicated their relationship was "on the rocks".

Many claimed their way of living was a "red flag", with several likening their relationship to "roommates" instead of boyfriend and girlfriend.

"You are no longer a couple - just roommates. May as well end the relationship now," one viewer declared, with a second adding: "I would break up with someone if they suggested this."

"How are you supposed to have spontaneous intimate moments - or are you the kind of people who put that in a calendar? Gross and unhealthy," a third critiqued.

But others backed the young couple and offered their own anecdotes to illustrate why sharing a bedroom doesn't work for everyone.

"My bf has ADHD and I'm NT [neurologically typical]. We have separate bedrooms so he can create as many piles of organised chaos as he wants without driving me crazy," one woman shared.

Others argued that choosing to have separate bedrooms didn't invalidate the relationship, with a number admitting they would consider the same set-up if they had the space.

"This is great - sleepovers in each other's rooms but still have your own space, love it," another added.

Meanwhile, a number of supporters suggested that the sleeping arrangement may even keep the 'early days' excitement alive, with one writing: "I would be texting her to 'come over' even though her room is the next one along".

Several more noted that the arrangement could be the perfect solution for shift workers, people who have difficulty sleeping, people who snore or those with mental health issues.

Another woman said she started with separate bedrooms before adding 'his and her' bathrooms to the mix.

"It was life changing for us - we have sleepovers whenever we want but never argue about mess anymore."

The viral video has been liked more than 423,000 times at the time of writing.
