Despite netting a reported NZ$780 million fortune, David Beckham still enjoys classic British pub grub, if a photo of his dinner is anything to go by.

The former professional footballer shared a snap of one of his "favourite" meals with his 75.4 million followers on Instagram last week, thanking his mum for whipping up one his childhood staples.

"Gammon, chips, fried egg, tinned pineapple, peas & baked beans, coleslaw," the 47-year-old captioned the pic, adding: "Last night's feast, one of my favourites growing up. Thanks mum."

While the innocent snap garnered praise from some fans, with many finding Beckham's soft spot for his mum's home-cooked meals both sweet and relatable, others were quick to point out supposed flaws with the combination of food.

"Pineapple does not belong on a main meal," one pointed out, with a second adding: "Coleslaw and mushy peas? Has everyone gone berserk?"

Others argued the meal was "perfectly acceptable" and came to the Beckhams' defence, with one declaring: "Egg goes well with gammon, coleslaw with pineapple, chips with peas."

The British icon, who grew up in London's East End, has admitted he gets "emotional" about food and wine; however his wife of 23 years, Victoria Beckham, is not as much of a foodie.

Earlier this year, Beckham revealed his wife has eaten the same meal every day for 25 years, prompting a slew of headlines and shock on social media. Victoria, formerly known as Posh Spice from her time in the iconic British girl group the Spice Girls, is notoriously picky when it comes to food and according to her husband, eats grilled fish and steamed vegetables daily to maintain her trim figure.

Speaking to the River Cafe Table 4 podcast with Ruth Rogers, Beckham admitted he enjoys indulging in red meat and wine when he's home alone. He also revealed he can only remember one time where Victoria, 48, ate something from his plate, calling it "one of [his] favourite evenings".

On the podcast, Beckham also shared his favourite comfort foods, admitting he can't resist a toastie with baked beans and salt and vinegar crisps.

"After talking about all of this great food and all of these great restaurants I go to, my comfort food is a packet of salt and vinegar Discos… I'm more of a crisp man than a chocolate," he said.

"And maybe a toastie made in the Brevile toaster with baked beans… I put the bread in – Hovis. A little bit of butter on the outside so it doesn't stick. I put the baked beans in, toast it for four or five minutes, and open it up. No cheese."

Alternatively, Victoria - a self-proclaimed "fussy eater" - doesn't exactly have a taste for seasoning, despite becoming a household name for her time in the Spice Girls.

Speaking on a previous episode of the River Cafe Table 4 podcast, the mum-of-four prompted a public outcry after she revealed her favourite comfort food was "toast with salt on it".

"This is where I sound even more boring in the food department. Okay, what do I like? I like whole grain toast with salt on it," she admitted.

The star also said she likes her meals to be cooked without oils, butter or sauces - a preference not shared by her sports star husband.
