How one newly-wed couple found true love and each other again after nearly 75 years

Music can stir up so many emotions - it can make you smile, it can make you cry. But for one Christchurch couple, it sparked true love.

Lynley Clarke and Grahame Wright's shared love of music blossomed into a love for each other.

"What are we called? The lovebirds," the pair said.

The couple, aged 82 and 83, are getting married.

"They are just so in love, it is just the most beautiful story," said maid of honour Tric Nelson.

Beautiful, but perhaps unexpected. Clarke and Wright, who live separately at Summerset Retirement Village, reconnected after Wright spotted a familiar face while out on a walk.

"And he said, 'I went to Addington School with you'," Clarke told Newshub.

That was nearly 75 years ago - in 1949.

"Then he added, 'and you haven't changed a bit'," she recalled.

After primary school, Wright and Clarke went their separate ways and both had marriages of nearly 60 years.

"Had it not been for the music, our relationship would never have happened," said Clarke.

They're still amazed they've found love a second time, but that doesn't stop them from fondly reminiscing about their late spouses.

"Neither of us were looking for it, it just happened," Clarke added. "I never ever dreamt this would be my life."

And soon, they'll spend the rest of their lives together.

"She's like a 15-year-old schoolgirl out on her first date, it's just so precious," Nelson said.

Clarke designed her own dress too, adding: "Grahame likes my ankles, so I didn't want to cover them up."

And on the day, the newlyweds couldn't have looked happier - sealing their love with a kiss.
