Cockroach infestation? Yes. Poor hygiene standards? Yes. Procedures not being followed? Yes.
Auckland Council has revealed there are currently nine eateries with D-grade ratings: Indian Gypsy in Henderson, for the reasons mentioned above, is one of them.
Reasons the other eight restaurants were slapped with a D-grade included the detection of other pests, poor food storage and unsatisfactory food safety training. Currently, no restaurants have an E-grade - the lowest possible rating.
D-graded restaurants "have been identified as having issues that are likely to result in kai being unsafe or unsuitable, and action has been taken as a response", Auckland Council said.
The list of food outlets with D-grades:
- Chicking Māngere
- Indian Gypsy, Henderson
- Maxbake Bakery & Lunch Bar, Manukau
- Kebab King Wellesley St, AUT
- The Great Tong Takeaways, Māngere
- Tai Ping Flat Bush, East Tāmaki
- Golden Dragon Takeaway, Ōtara
- The Base Bar and Grill, Rosedale
- Gorkha Eastern Beach.
The restaurants received the grades between February 2 and April 14.
Since then, Chicking Māngere has had two follow-up visits and a third was planned for next week. The other eight restaurants were awaiting their first follow-up visits.
If non-compliances aren't addressed properly, Auckland Council said it continues follow-up visits until the issues are fixed. Otherwise, "other enforcement action" is initiated.
