Cost of living: Website shows how New Zealand's petrol prices compare to the rest of the world

New Zealand's fuel is only cheaper than 25 other countries around the world, a petrol price-tracking website suggests.

The website, GlobaPetrolPrices.com, shows how many dollars per litre each country is paying for 95 octane - based on official data sources.

Based on data to June 20, the list shows New Zealand is paying less for petrol than the likes of Lithuania, Italy, Belgium and Barbados but is paying more than Hungary, Albania and Liechtenstein. The figures show New Zealand's average 95 petrol price was NZ$3.34 per litre.

Kiwis are also paying less at the pump than other countries in the Asia-Pacific region including Singapore (NZ$3.69/L) and Hong Kong (NZ$4.74/L).

New Zealand was ranked miles ahead of the likes of Finland (NZ$4.21/L), Iceland (NZ$4.17/L) and Norway and Greece (both just above NZ$4/L).

However, New Zealand's petrol prices were still well above Australia's. Prices for 95 across the Tasman sat at NZ$2.26.

The countries with the cheapest fuel were Venezuela (NZ$0.035/L), Libya (NZ$0.049/L), Iran (NZ$0.084/L), Syria (NZ$0.45/L) and Algeria (NZ$0.5/L).
