Police have named four people who were killed in separate road crashes at the weekend.

Hamilton man Anthony Tony Taki Pihema, 47, died when the car he was driving crashed on State Highway 3 south of Te Kuiti at Te Mapara early on Saturday morning.

Sydney man Mark Anthony Taylor, also 47, died yesterday afternoon in Huntly when the motorbike he was riding hit an oncoming car.

Dannevirke man Rodger Barry James Chappell, 42, and Eric Frank Bird, 77, of Pahiatua, died following a head-on crash near Mt Bruce on Sunday.

Police have extended their sympathy to the families.

"Our thoughts are with all those who are grieving after losing loved ones," Inspector Freda Grace said in a statement.

"These crashes could have been prevented. Police cannot emphasise enough to drivers the importance of following the road rules and driving to the conditions to ensure that all road users are safe," Insp Grace said.
