Grim start to long weekend road toll

There has been a horror start to the long weekend road toll, with two people dead in separate crashes.

The latest incident occurred around 5:32am on SH3 at Tanehopuwai, near Te Kuiti.

One person has died and another two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, diversions are currently in place as a scene investigation gets underway.

Motorists are being urged to be patient and avoid the area if possible.

It follows a fatal crash yesterday evening when four cars collided near Hawkesbury Village north of Dunedin, just before 6pm.

A 64-year-old man from Kaikoura was killed and six others were injured, one of whom remains in critical condition.

There were also several other serious crashes overnight.

Two more people were rushed to Whangarei Hospital when their cars collided north of Kaiwaka just after 7pm on Friday.

A pregnant woman and a man were both in serious condition as a result and had to be freed from the wreck.

Also, at around 1:20am on Saturday two more people were injured after a serious crash in Palmerston North.

The incident occurred on Railway Rd. According to police, the two vehicles involved were 'boy racer-style' cars.

One person received moderate injuries, while another sustained minor injuries.
