A paraglider who died after hitting rock at Mt Maunganui on Saturday afternoon was a local pilot.

Emergency services were alerted to the fatal crash incident at 3:25pm.

Dominique Le Sellin from the Bay of Plenty Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association said it was an "unfortunate" accident.

"We have a lot of visiting pilots who come to fly the Mount, but this was a local pilot."

Police confirmed the paraglider was dead later that evening.
