Car involved in east Auckland fatal crash almost unrecognisable

The car involved in a horror crash where two people killed in East Auckland was almost unrecognisable.

Police were called to a stretch of Pakuranga Rd between Johns Ln and Gossamer Dr just after 7:20am on Friday.

The crash scene was a mangled wreck in which police say a male and a female died.

Parts of the Honda Accord were strewn across the road and curbside and those visiting the scene, many who were teenagers, were overcome with emotion.

Mark Brown first discovered the wreckage.

"[I] noticed a wing mirror on the ground and then had a look around the back of the building and saw what was left of the car impaled on to the building," Mr Brown said.

Police say the dark coloured Honda Accord was likely travelling down a long main stretch before coming off the road.

Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell said from the damage it's pretty evident that speed was a contributing factor.

Locals said it's a common road for people to speed on.

Police believe the crash happened hours before the alarm was raised.

Neighbours who spoke to Newshub said they heard a loud thud at about 4.30 this morning.

One described it as if it was a building collapsing while a couple who lives nearby said they heard several bangs and glass shattering.

The car broke into three pieces on impact - something police don't see everyday.

"I've got one staff member just behind me who's been in the job for 40 years and he told me just before that this is a particularly nasty incident," Snr Sgt Chappell says.

It's a timely reminder for the public to take care when they are driving on the roads, he says.

The police are still formally identifying the victims but want to hear from anyone who saw the car in the area early on Friday morning.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
