Fire investigators will be looking into Thursday night's explosion at a meat processing plant in the Far North.

A worker at the Affco freezing works in Moerewa was taken to hospital suffering burns.

Firefighters were called just after 7:30pm on Thursday. An ambulance rushed to the scene and a helicopter was used to transport the person to hospital.

The injury came about after a coal hopper erupted in flames, reports suggest. It's believed a problem with a boiler may have sparked the blast.
