A man has been arrested following a stabbing at a Hawke's Bay marae on Saturday.

A 20-year-old woman was left in a serious condition after she was stabbed in a fight at Moreo Marae near Puketapu. Two men were also hospitalised following the incident.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old man appeared in Hastings District Court charged with injuring with intent. He has been remanded in custody.

Police say they still have a number of witnesses to talk to, and it's likely more people will be arrested in relation to the incident.

Moteo Marae chairperson Peter Eden has condemned the fight and the resulting injuries.

"I am extremely disappointed by the actions of those that went onto the marae grounds and caused problems," he said in a statement.

"Violence is never tolerated anywhere, especially on a marae, so to have that level of violence occur at Moteo where three people were injured is terrible."

Mr Eden said the marae's thoughts are with the whanau members who are recovering, and it is now working on preventing it from recurring.

"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and the marae will be working hard to make sure that this never happens again.

"Moteo Marae has always been a peaceful and safe place for our whanau, and we want it to remain that way."

He said the marae has received overwhelming support from communities across the country.
