Weather: Flooding risk as heavy rain, strong winds strike New Zealand

New Zealanders are being warned to watch out for flooding as a heavy rain and strong winds strike the country on Wednesday.

"The main threat this week to New Zealand comes from a sub-tropical northerly between this low and the blocking high to the east," Weather Watch says.

"The main rainy period in the northern and western North Island and western South Island will begin during Wednesday morning."

MetService warns a severe weather watch for heavy rain is in place across many northern areas of the North Island as well as a strong wind watch for western areas of the South Island. There's also the "broad moderate risk of thunderstorms" as the weather system moves over the North Island.

This heavy rain could cause chaos for commuters, with the risk of localised downpours causing flooding on roads in Auckland, the Bay of Plenty and possibly the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape too.

"There is a risk of localised downpours, particularly in the east of the region. A good day to keep eyes on the radar," MetService says.

"Some heavier falls are seen farther east (Coromandel/Bay of Plenty/Gisborne) tomorrow into Thursday. Watch for pockets of surface flooding!" NIWA adds.
